Martinsville, VA:Â Hooker Furniture (NASDAQ-GS: HOFT), together with subsidiaries Sam Moore and Bradington-Young, recently announced a long-range commitment to environmental stewardship through sustainable business practices. The Company is seeking EFEC (Enhancing Furniture's Environmental Culture) registration for all of its facilities. EFEC is an environmental management program developed by the American Home Furnishings Alliance, the largest association of home furnishings manufacturers, importers and suppliers in the world.
EFEC stresses better management of resources and raw materials, energy conservation and reduction of a company's environmental impact on a facility-by-facility basis and through an approach of continuous improvement.
"We consider the legacy we pass to future generations through the world our children inherit to be one of our most important responsibilities," said Paul B. Toms Jr., chairman and chief executive. "In keeping with our core values of citizenship and caring, we are mobilizing our resources to better understand the environmental impact of all our processes and to strengthen our corporate-wide commitment to environmental best practices."
Late last year, the company formed a Sustainability Steering Committee to guide Hooker, Bradington-Young and Sam Moore through the process of developing a sustainability strategy and mission statement. The company has team leaders in place for each company to guide facility teams through the EFEC registration process. Alan Cole, Hooker Furniture's executive vice president-upholstery, is heading up the Sustainability Steering Committee.
"Our sustainability strategy is to take a comprehensive approach to environmental management that permeates our corporate culture, impacts all aspects of our business practices and involves every employee in our organization," said Cole. "We are just beginning the journey and have by no means arrived, but we are committed to continuous improvement and a meaningful, diligent pursuit of environmental stewardship."
