International Home Furnishings Market, High Point, N.C., Spring 2009: As part of the company's largest and most diverse introduction in many years, Hooker Furniture has debuted two casual transitional collections, Kinston and Legends, expanding beyond its American/European traditional style roots.

Kinston is a sophisticated transitional 70-piece collection of bedroom, dining room, accents, home office and home entertainment furnishings constructed of highly sustainable bamboo veneers and hardwood solids. The pieces feature a two-tone color palette in black and brown with purple undertones, and a subtle Asian and laid-back island flavor. Case tops offer an exquisite four-way book-match patterned veneer in rich brown with a contrasting black rub-through border.

"What's so exciting about Kinston is how it has been embraced by a wide variety of groups of people who previewed it prior to pre-market," said Mike Spece, executive vice president-merchandising. "Retailers, buyers, retail salespeople and a focus group of college students all were enthusiastic about it."

Some of the most outstanding Kinston pieces include a revolving bedroom chest with jewelry storage behind a full length mirror on one side and lingerie drawers on the other; a dining/kitchen bench with optional tufted cushion and a dramatic platform panel bed with footboard storage. Another functional piece is a sliding door chest with two sliding doors, one with a full length mirror. Six drawers with hardware are behind the doors on the left side and two open shelves with three pullout drawers are behind the doors on the right side.

Legends is a 22-piece collection of "stand alone items" in a high-end primitive design and Asian influences. Legends combines four different veneer types: primavera, cherry, pine and red birch. On the dramatic slab-style dining table, the veneers are scored to look like solids. Handsome hammered look hardware punctuates the collection that could be described as a "hip antique" look.
In addition to a full dining assortment, some of the distinctive items in the collection include stacking TV consoles, mirrors, desks, a file cabinet and stools.
