According to leading decorators and architects, formal dining in America is going the way of the butler. Since most families use their formal dining room only a few times a year, they don't think the room justifies the space. Therefore, walls are coming down and casual tables, buffets and cabinets are used as part of family rooms or other open spaces. The dining room is being converted for another use, sometimes as a home office.

Casual dining creates a cozier, more intimate atmosphere. Increasingly, Hooker is emphasizing round, rather than rectangular tables. "Round tables promote eye contact and conversation," said Mike Spece, senior vice president. Several of Hooker's tables include lazy Susans, so everyone can easily share the veggies and rolls at dinner or the popcorn during late-night chats.

"Casual dining is far and away our fastest-growing category," Spece said. "It's what our customers want. The idea is to make it look good and feel good."
